What makes the Worm Moon 2027 special
The Worm Moon rises almost due east and sets almost due west, as the Sun does at the equinox. The March full moon takes a middle path across the sky, lower than the winter full moons and higher than the summer ones. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, so in some years the Worm Moon is that Paschal Moon and in others the Pink Moon is.
Sky descriptions are for the Northern Hemisphere; south of the equator the seasons and the Moon’s height are reversed.
Why it is called the Worm Moon
The usual explanation is the earthworm casts that appear as the ground thaws, inviting the robins back. A second reading goes back to Captain Jonathan Carver’s travels in the 1760s, where the worms were beetle larvae emerging from thawing bark.

The Worm Moon in lunar tradition
A moon of thaw and return. In folklore it marks the moment the soil wakes up and the year’s work in the garden begins.
The first outdoor sowing of the year in mild regions: tradition sows peas, spinach, and lettuce under the waxing Moon before it and carrots and onion sets under the waning Moon after it. Maple sap is running, which gave the Sap Moon its name.
With the Moon in Libra, an air sign, the day of the Worm Moon 2027 is a flower day in the garden tradition. The Moon in Libra page explains what the sign means; the planting calendar and the hair calendar turn the phase into dates.
