Second only to Leo among days for hair: a cut on a Virgo day is said to be exact and to hold its shape for a long time. Tradition also names it the best day for a perm and a good one for masks and scalp care.
Under a waning Moon (from full moon to new moon), hair is said to grow more slowly and a cut to keep its shape longer, which suits short styles. Tradition also reads it as a time for cleansing: a scalp scrub and a deep wash. Coloring waits for the waxing Moon, as the color is said to wash out sooner now.

Haircut rules by phase and sign
Lunar tradition combines two rules. The first is the phase: under a waxing Moon, from the new moon to the full moon, hair is said to grow back faster after a cut; under a waning Moon it is said to grow more slowly and the cut to hold its shape longer. The second is the sign the Moon is passing through, which changes every two to three days, and some signs have a rule of their own:
| Moon in | What the tradition says |
|---|---|
| Leo | Thickness and volume: the best day for a cut if you want fuller hair, and under a waxing Moon the top day for coloring |
| Virgo | A precise cut that holds its shape for a long time, and the best day for a perm |
| Capricorn | Strong, resilient hair that splits and breaks less; good for trimming the ends |
| Cancer Pisces | Skip the cut: in Cancer a cut is said to leave hair unruly and brittle, in Pisces to encourage dandruff |
| Aries Taurus Gemini Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Aquarius | Ordinary days: the phase of the Moon decides, growth while waxing and a lasting cut while waning |
Two exceptions: on the day of the new moon and on the day of the full moon, tradition neither cuts nor colors. Why the phases change and how the cycle works: phases of the Moon.
Coloring and treatments by the Moon
Tradition favors coloring hair under a waxing Moon, from the new moon to the full moon, when the color is said to last longer and come out richer. Under a waning Moon it is said to wash out sooner, and on the days of the new moon and the full moon, and on the Cancer and Pisces days, coloring is skipped. Among the signs, Leo favors coloring the most; Virgo is the day for a perm.
The next good stretches for coloring: Nov 10β17, Nov 20β23, and Dec 10β14.
Treatments follow the phase in the tradition: nourishing masks and oils under a waxing Moon, when hair is said to take them in best; a scalp scrub and a deep wash under a waning Moon. Virgo days are also read as good days for masks and scalp care.
When not to cut your hair
Tradition skips the cut on the days of the new moon and the full moon and while the Moon is in Cancer or Pisces: after a cut on a Cancer day, hair is said to turn unruly and brittle, and after one on a Pisces day, dandruff is said to follow.
The next days to skip: Nov 9 (new moon), Nov 18 (Pisces), Nov 19 (Pisces), Nov 24 (full moon), Nov 26 (Cancer), Nov 27 (Cancer), Dec 9 (new moon), and Dec 15 (Pisces).

Hair and the 12 moon signs
The Moonβs sign changes every two to three days, so each sign comes around about once a month. What each one means for hair in the tradition:
-
Aries
An ordinary cutting day: the phase of the Moon decides the result. Part of the tradition counts fiery Aries, right after Leo and Virgo, among the good days for hair.
-
Taurus
An ordinary cutting day, with the phase deciding the result. Calm, earthy Taurus is said to favor patient, unhurried care rather than big changes.
-
Gemini
An ordinary day for a cut or a new style. Airy Gemini days are traditionally linked with playful, light styles and changes that do not have to be forever.
-
Cancer
In lunar tradition, hair is not cut on Cancer days: a cut is said to leave it unruly, brittle, and hard to style, and some calendars skip washing it too. Wait a day or two until the Moon moves into Leo.
-
Leo
Traditionally the best day for a cut when you want thickness and volume: Leo is the sign of the mane, and hair cut on Leo days is said to grow back fuller. It favors coloring as well; under a waxing Moon it is the top day for a new color.
-
Virgo
Second only to Leo among days for hair: a cut on a Virgo day is said to be exact and to hold its shape for a long time. Tradition also names it the best day for a perm and a good one for masks and scalp care.
-
Libra
An ordinary cutting day by phase. Tradition gives Libra a sense of beauty and balance, so it suits reshaping a style and tidying the lines.
-
Scorpio
An ordinary day for cutting; the phase decides the result. Scorpio days are traditionally linked with intensive treatments and masks; a few calendars treat this water sign with some caution for cutting.
-
Sagittarius
An ordinary cutting day; let the phase decide. A maintenance trim is fine; some calendars are more cautious about bold experiments with a new style on Sagittarius days.
-
Capricorn
Earthy Capricorn is said to strengthen hair: after a cut it is thought to be firmer and to split or break less. It suits trimming the ends; for a big change of style, tradition prefers Leo or Virgo.
-
Aquarius
An ordinary cutting day, so the phase decides. Airy Aquarius is the sign of experiments in the tradition: an unusual cut or a new look is said to come out more easily on its days.
-
Pisces
In lunar tradition, hair is not cut on Pisces days: a cut is said to encourage dandruff. Give hair a rest instead, with no heat and no chemicals.
Beauty by the Moon
Lunar tradition times other beauty care by phase and sign as well:
-
Skin
Tradition places cleansing and masks on Virgo days and under a waning Moon; under a waxing Moon the skin is said to take in nourishing care better.
-
Nails
A manicure and nail trimming go on Capricorn days in the tradition, when nails are said to grow back firmer and break less.
-
Hair removal
Waxing and shaving are traditionally done under a waning Moon, when regrowth is said to be slower; Leo days, the days of thickness, are skipped.
-
Massage
Tradition pairs relaxing and draining massage with the waning Moon and firming, nourishing treatments with the waxing Moon.

Why people cut their hair by the Moon
Timing a haircut by the Moon is one of the liveliest parts of lunar tradition; plenty of people who never open a lunar calendar still ask their hairdresser for a date after the full moon. In its modern form the tradition pairs two rules. The phase comes first: under a waxing Moon, from new moon to full moon, hair is said to grow back faster after a cut and to take color better; under a waning Moon it is said to grow more slowly, so a cut holds its shape longer. The sign the Moon is passing through adds the second rule: Leo, the sign of the mane, stands for thickness, Virgo for a precise cut that keeps its line, and Capricorn for strong hair. On the days of two water signs, Cancer and Pisces, tradition leaves the scissors alone.
What the evidence says
Honestly, there is none. Hair grows from the follicle under the skin at about half an inch (a little over a centimeter) a month, and cutting the ends does not change that rate, whatever the phase of the Moon. What the calendar offers, even without any belief in the Moonβs pull, is a rhythm: a regular date for trimming the ends, a treatment, or a visit to the salon, so that hair care does not get put off for months. Many people use it exactly that way.
How to read this calendar
For each day the calendar shows the phase, the Moonβs sign, and the verdict that follows from both. There is no single right day to catch: a month has more than 20 days when a cut is fine by the tradition, every week has at least three, and the Leo and Virgo days come around every month for four or five days in a row. If the only appointment you can get falls on a day the tradition would skip, nothing is lost; the calendar is a planning aid, not a rule.
The same rhythm of phases and signs runs through the rest of the lunar tradition, from food and health to the planting calendar. Each daily page shows what the tradition suggests for that date and links back to this calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Which days are good for hair cutting?
Lunar tradition favors the days when the Moon is in Leo (thickness and volume) or Virgo (a precise cut that holds its shape), with Capricorn for strength. Under a waxing Moon, hair is said to grow back fast after a cut; under a waning Moon, the cut is said to last longer. The next Leo and Virgo days: Nov 5, Nov 28, Nov 29, Nov 30, Dec 1, Dec 2.
What days are you not supposed to cut your hair?
In lunar tradition hair is not cut on the day of the new moon or the full moon, or while the Moon is in Cancer or Pisces: a cut in Cancer is said to leave hair unruly and brittle, in Pisces to encourage dandruff. The next days to skip: Nov 9, Nov 18, Nov 19, Nov 24, Nov 26, Nov 27.
What day is good luck to cut your hair?
Luck is a matter of folklore: in the lunar tradition the good days are simply the Leo and Virgo days of each month, plus the waxing Moon for growth and the waning Moon for a cut that lasts. Some folk calendars add weekday superstitions, but the lunar calendar works only with the phase and the sign.
Is today a good day to cut hair for growth?
Not by tradition: today, November 5, 2026, the cut is said to come out exact and hold its shape for a long time. For growth, tradition picks the waxing Moon, from the new moon to the full moon, and above all the Leo days that fall in it. The next growth days: Nov 10, Nov 11, Nov 12, Nov 15, Nov 16, Nov 17.
When is the best time to color hair by the moon?
By tradition, hair is colored under a waxing Moon, when the color is said to hold longer and come out richer, and a Leo day is the top choice. A waning Moon is said to make color wash out sooner, and the days of the new moon and the full moon, as well as Cancer and Pisces days, are skipped. The next good stretches for coloring: Nov 10β17, Nov 20β23, Dec 10β14.
