What makes the Flower Moon 2027 special
May 2026 had two full moons, on May 1 and May 31, and the second one was a Blue Moon. The May full moon sits lower in northern skies than the spring moons before it, climbing less than halfway up, and it often looks large and warm-colored near the horizon.
Sky descriptions are for the Northern Hemisphere; south of the equator the seasons and the Moon’s height are reversed.
Why it is called the Flower Moon
By May, wildflowers are out in force across most of North America, and the Algonquin name followed. Other names point to the same season: planting corn, cows giving rich milk, and eggs being laid.

The Flower Moon in lunar tradition
A moon of abundance in folklore: the fields are planted, the orchards are in bloom, and the days are long.
May brings the busiest planting weeks of the year. Lunar gardening tradition sows and transplants fruiting crops such as tomatoes, beans, and squash under the waxing Moon, after the last frost date, and turns to root crops under the waning Moon.
With the Moon in Scorpio, a water sign, the day of the Flower Moon 2027 is a leaf day in the garden tradition. The Moon in Scorpio page explains what the sign means; the planting calendar and the hair calendar turn the phase into dates.
